The Campbell House

The Campbell House: A Lexington Legend

Nestled in the heart of Lexington, The Campbell House, Curio Collection by Hilton, is more than a hotel—it’s a Bluegrass icon. Known as both “The Horse Capital of the World” and “The Athens of the West,” Lexington has long been a place of history, heritage, and hospitality. Since 1951, The Campbell House has embodied that spirit, welcoming travelers with warmth, elegance, and Kentucky pride.

From Vision to Landmark

The Campbell House first opened its doors in 1951, the dream of Ralph Campbell, whose name it still proudly bears. In 1968, Lexington businessman Kilbern Cormney took ownership and began transforming the modest motor inn into a sophisticated hotel.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, The Campbell House grew alongside the city itself. Additions like the Belmont Wing, Preakness Wing, and the elegant Colonial Ballroom expanded the property’s capacity and reputation. After a devastating 1986 fire, the hotel quickly rebuilt—stronger and grander—becoming Lexington’s premier destination for gatherings, galas, and Southern hospitality.

A Modern Revival

In the 2000s, The Campbell House entered a new era. A $10 million renovation reintroduced the hotel as Kentucky’s first Crowne Plaza, updating every room and meeting space while preserving the charm of its storied past. The addition of Bogart’s Lounge and the Colonial Ballroom made it a favorite for celebrations and corporate events alike.
In 2014, Rockbridge Capital purchased The Campbell House with a vision to restore its mid-century charm while introducing a new level of modern sophistication. A multimillion-dollar renovation began in 2019 and was completed in 2020, blending classic Southern elegance with contemporary style.
The redesign introduced equestrian-inspired décor, handcrafted bourbon details, and refined modern finishes throughout the guest rooms, public areas, and event spaces. During this transformation, the hotel’s indoor pool was reimagined into a stunning grand ballroom, creating a centerpiece for weddings, meetings, and special events.
By 2020, The Campbell House proudly joined the Curio Collection by Hilton under Rockbridge Capital—marking a new chapter of timeless luxury and Lexington tradition.

Bourbon, Flavor & Bluegrass Spirit

As part of the renovation, the Rackhouse Tavern opened—a rustic, barn-inspired restaurant celebrating Kentucky’s bourbon culture. Featuring one of the region’s most extensive bourbon selections, the Tavern became an official stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®.
The Outpost Café & Market was also introduced, offering grab-and-go fare for guests on the move. Together, these updates cemented The Campbell House as a destination that honors its heritage while embracing modern hospitality.

A Tribute to Tradition: Stevie Wonderboy

Greeting guests at the hotel’s entrance is the bronze statue of Stevie Wonderboy, a tribute to Lexington’s equestrian legacy.
The Horse: Bred in Kentucky and owned by entertainer Merv Griffin, Stevie Wonderboy was a champion Thoroughbred who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Grade 1) and earned over $1 million during his racing career.

The Sculpture: Created from hundreds of reference photos, the statue was custom-crafted to capture the horse’s likeness with striking realism.

The Symbolism: Stevie Wonderboy embodies the grace, power, and tradition that define both Kentucky’s racing heritage and The Campbell House’s enduring connection to the Bluegrass spirit.

A Timeless Lexington Landmark

Today, The Campbell House, Curio Collection by Hilton, stands as a symbol of Lexington’s history and hospitality—where Southern charm meets modern luxury. With its storied past, deep equestrian roots, and unwavering dedication to service, The Campbell House remains a Lexington tradition, welcoming guests to experience the heart of the Bluegrass in timeless style.
